Final Grassroots Ambassadors training of the year takes place in Minneapolis

15 Grassroots Ambassadors from TakeAction Minnesota and Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI) convened in Minneapolis from August 12-14 for workshops, story sharing, and an action on the 80th anniversary of Social Security.  The training on CCC’s economic justice messaging led by Wendoly Marte was a highlight, with leaders spending significant time incorporating the messaging principles into their personal stories and campaign narratives.

The 2 1/2 day training was the final Grassroots Ambassador gathering of seven organized this summer by CCC’s retirement security team.  Like in other trainings, the agenda was put together by the Ambassadors themselves during months of pre-planning, and many of the workshops — on storytelling, becoming public spokespeople, basebuilding, and the history of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid — were led by Ambassadors.

The group applied their learning about the history of Social Security to a 75 foot banner showing the timeline of our country’s social insurance system.  That banner was taken into the streets on August 14, the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act, and used as the backdrop for a rally in front of a downtown Macy’s.  More info and photos of the action are here.
